The general Kléber was a popular strategist under Napoleon Bonaparte and the leader of the famous expeditionary army in Egypt. In June 1800, general Kléber was murdered by a turkish fanatic. The assassin was impaled in oriental tradition because of the great bitterness of the French soldiers. This monument, which can be found at Place Kléber, was built by the artist Philippe Grass in 1840.
